Yoga + Meditation
in the Shrine Room

Accessible yoga in a sacred space to support deeper meditation

Kurukulla Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies in Medford, MA, has a very beautiful and peaceful shrine room, which has been blessed by the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama twice, in 2003 and 2012. I have been teaching yoga and meditation in this sacred space for nearly twenty years.

Yoga postures came about in ancient times so that yogis would have strong healthy bodies conducive for sitting and meditating for long periods of time. These days, it’s rare to find a yoga class that includes serious meditation.

This mixed-levels class is accessible to most bodies. Everyone is encouraged to listen deeply to their own body while doing the poses. There is no one right way that works for every single body, and there is no pressure or expectation that you have to do all the poses. The most important thing is that you feel good, you take some deeper breaths, and you show up in the present moment.

We finish with fifteen to twenty-minutes of guided meditation. The meditation practice varies depending on the day, the season, requests and questions from students, what’s going on in the world, what has come up in my own practice, etc., I draw from my many years of experience to guide you in a variety of meditation techniques. Over time you’ll learn the basics of a conducive meditation posture, mindfulness of the breath, visualization, and how to meditate on a theme and or an aspect of your life. As well, we do a few minutes of chanting the mantra “om mani padme hum” which means “homage to compassion and wisdom.” Of course, you don’t have to chant and can instead listen with a peaceful heart.

Currently, because of the pandemic, this class is being held via Zoom. We hope to resume in-person classes in the Shrine Room later in 2021. The Kurukulla Center Shrine Room yoga class is freely offered by both myself and Sarah L. Frederiksen -- we do not receive any monetary or other compensation. If you wish to make a donation to the Center it is gratefully received.

Please check the Kurukulla Center calendar site for the current schedule of classes.
